Start with what you're keeping in
Horses, cattle, goats and dogs each need different fencing. Horses need visible, forgiving fences, cattle can be held by high-tensile or barbed wire, and goats need small openings and enough height.
Common farm fence types
- Wood board fence: classic look, good visibility for horses
- Woven wire: good for goats, sheep and mixed livestock
- High-tensile wire: economical for long runs
- Electric: often added as a top or offset wire
- Welded wire: smaller areas, gardens and dog yards
Corners and braces
On wire fences, corner and brace assemblies hold all the tension. Well-built braces keep a long fence tight for years.
Ground conditions
Limestone and rocky ground are common in parts of the county and can slow post installation. An installer will plan the right equipment for your land.
